Chapter 1: The Solidbody Build Blueprint: What You're Making and How to Get There

Every guitar you have ever held, admired, or cursed at on a stage began as a pile of decisions. Wood choice, neck angle, fret wire size, pickup height, string gauge, truss rod tension — each one a variable that either moved you closer to or further from the instrument you heard in your head. This book exists to make those decisions deliberate, measurable, and repeatable. By the time you finish the final chapter, you will have built a complete solidbody electric guitar from raw lumber to a perfectly intonated, professionally set-up instrument. More importantly, you will understand why every measurement matters, and you will have the confidence to deviate from the templates when your own design sense demands it.

This is not a coffee-table book. It is a bench manual. The pages are meant to be traced, annotated, and splattered with finish. The binding should crack at the chapter on routing the neck pocket because that is where the book will spend most of its open time. Every procedure in these chapters has been tested on real builds, and every number has been verified with calipers, dial indicators, and a decent ear. Where a range is given — for example, neck relief of 0.008–0.012 inches — the lower number is the starting point for a low-action player, and the higher number is for someone who digs in hard with a heavy pick.
