Chapter 1: The Prospector's Mindset: From Luck to Method
You are standing in a river, ankle-deep in 48°F water, holding a plastic pan half-full of gravel. You have just spent forty-five minutes digging down to bedrock through a hole that collapsed twice. Your hands are numb. Your lower back is starting to complain. And you are staring at a thin layer of black sand and a few dozen tiny flakes of mica that catch the light like they are mocking you.
This is the moment that separates prospectors from gamblers.
The gambler sees the glitter and thinks: gold. He scoops up the black sand, washes it carefully, watches the mica float away, and finds nothing. He moves ten feet upstream, digs another hole, finds nothing. He moves again. By the end of the day, he has dug six holes, found zero gold, and decided that the river is "worked out."
The prospector sees the same glitter and thinks: mica has a specific gravity of 2.8; gold is 19.3. Mica flakes are light and flat; they float on a pan's surface tension. Gold is seven times heavier; it sinks immediately. That glitter is mica. The black sand, on the other hand, is mostly magnetite and hematite, specific gravity 5.2, which means it settles in the same traps as gold but requires less water velocity to move.
