You've probably noticed it by now. The advice that is supposed to work feels stale and out of touch. Polish your LinkedIn profile. Network more. Tailor your resume for every single job. In this economy, be a "culture fit." "A players hire A players, B players hire C players." All of this is just noise.
The reality is that if you've been following this advice and you are still not getting the job, you are not failing at the execution. You are failing at the diagnosis. The problem is not that your resume has the wrong keywords or that you are not networking "enough." The problem is the entire conceptual framework you are operating from is built on a lie about how hiring actually works.
The most pervasive and damaging piece of common wisdom is the idea that hiring is a meritocratic assessment of past achievements. The resume is a trophy case. The interview is a test. The candidate with the most impressive awards and the most eloquent answers wins. We believe that if we simply present the "objective" facts of our career history clearly enough, the right people will see our value and give us the job.
But this is fundamentally wrong.
Hiring is not an assessment. It is a prediction. And more specifically, it is an attempt to predict a future that is extremely difficult to evaluate based on the data you are providing. A resume is
