Most people don't fail at living well on a fixed income because they lack discipline. They fail because the standard advice is built on a lie. The lie is that the secret is to want less. Cut back. Tighten your belt. Stop buying coffee, cancel your subscriptions, and learn to be happy with less. This advice is pervasive, well-intentioned, and utterly counterproductive. It's the financial equivalent of telling someone who is hungry to just think about food less. It ignores the reality of human psychology and the actual mechanics of how money works in a household.

Consider the "Latte Fallacy." It's the most famous piece of common wisdom in personal finance: skip your daily latte, invest the five dollars, and you'll be a millionaire. The math works out over a long enough timeline, but the psychology is a disaster. It frames living well as a constant battle against a small pleasure. You are told to sacrifice a small, daily comfort for a distant, abstract reward. This approach creates a mindset of scarcity and punishment. You feel deprived, and eventually, the deprivation wins. You buy the latte, but now you feel guilty. This guilt leads to a cycle of on-and-off strictness, where you are either "good" and miserable, or "bad" and financially anxious.
