Chapter 1: Why Multiples Fight (and Why It's Not Your Fault)

Let’s start with a scene you probably know by heart. It’s 5:47 on a Tuesday evening. You are trying to get dinner on the table. The twins are three and a half. One of them—let’s call her Mia—is building a tower with the big wooden blocks. The other, Ava, is watching. For about thirty seconds, it’s fine. Then Ava reaches for the block Mia is about to place on top. Mia shrieks like she’s been burned. Ava grabs. Mia pushes. Ava cries. The tower collapses. You turn around from the stove, and both of them are looking at you with the same expression: You fix it. You haven’t even taken the pasta off the heat.

Or maybe your twins are five, and the fight is more verbal. “He’s looking at me.” “She breathed on my side of the car seat.” “You gave her the blue cup and I wanted the blue cup even though I said I wanted the pink cup five minutes ago.” Your head is pounding. You’re thinking, I love these children more than I knew it was possible to love anything, but if I have to mediate one more dispute over a partially-bitten cracker, I might have to go sit in the van for an hour.

If you are nodding along—or if you’re past nodding and just staring blankly at the page because you’re running on fumes—let me tell you something I want you to read
