Here is a question that stops most people cold. You are in a conversation. It is not going well. The other person says something that lands like a hand on a hot stove. Your chest tightens. Your jaw clenches. A sentence forms in your mouth, fully assembled, ready to fire. It is a sentence you know, from a thousand previous attempts, you will regret. And yet, despite every intention not to say it, you say it anyway.

When you ask people who have read every article and watched every TED talk about emotional regulation, they will tell you they "lost control." They will explain that they got "hijacked" by their amygdala. They will repeat the common wisdom that you need to "pause" and "breathe." And they will look at you with genuine frustration, because they have tried those things, and they have not worked.
