Chapter 1: What Does a Foundry Mold and Coremaker Actually Do?
Let's start with what you'd actually be doing, not the job description on a hiring website. A foundry mold and coremaker makes the temporary shapes that molten metal is poured into to create cast parts. Those parts might be engine blocks for tractors, valves for water treatment plants, brake rotors for semi-trucks, or fittings for plumbing. When someone says a part is "cast," it means it was formed by pouring liquid metal into a hollow cavity and letting it solidify. That cavity starts as a mold—and building that mold is your job.
The Two Things You Build
You'll spend your day building one of two things: molds or cores. The mold is the outer shell that gives the metal its outer shape. The core is a solid shape placed inside the mold to create holes, tunnels, or internal cavities in the finished part. Think of a cast iron pipe fitting like an elbow or a T-junction. The mold forms the outside of the fitting; the core forms the hollow passage on the inside. If you're making a water pump housing with an internal impeller cavity, you need a core that creates that cavity.
