Let's get one thing out of the way: a radiologic technologist and technician is not the person who reads your X-ray. That's a radiologist, a physician with a medical degree, who sits in a dark reading room and interprets the images. The technologist — often just called a "rad tech" — is the person who takes the image. You're the one who greets the patient, positions them on the exam table, sets the correct technical parameters on the machine, and makes sure the resulting picture is sharp enough for the doctor to make a diagnosis. You're the bridge between the patient and the radiologist.
The job title "Radiologic Technologist and Technician" is a bit of a mouthful, but it's the official government classification (SOC 29-2031). In practice, people in the field use a few different names: radiologic technologist, X-ray tech, rad tech, or radiographer. A "technician" is technically someone who performs a more limited set of tasks, but the two terms are used interchangeably in job listings and in everyday conversation at the hospital.
