Imagine a workshop where every item that comes in has a written prescription attached, and your job is to turn a flat piece of plastic or glass into a lens that corrects someone's vision. That's the core of what an ophthalmic laboratory technician does. You might work in a lab behind a retail eyeglasses store, or in a large industrial facility that makes lenses for hundreds of optical shops across the country. The setting changes, but the workflow is essentially the same: you take a prescription, you use machines to cut and shape a lens to match that prescription, and you mount it into a frame that the customer (or a shop) has chosen.
Let's be clear about one thing upfront: this is not a job where you work with patients. You will rarely, if ever, meet the person whose glasses you're making. Your interaction is with paper — or more likely, computer files — containing numbers that mean something specific: the sphere (how nearsighted or farsighted someone is), the cylinder and axis (how much astigmatism they have), and the pupillary distance (the distance between their pupils).
