An all-purpose cleaner is a formulated liquid product designed to remove a broad range of common soils from many hard-surface substrates. The term itself is a category label, not a legal definition. Unlike specialty chemicals that are engineered for a single task - an alkaline floor stripper, a food-grade sanitizer, a solvent degreaser - an all-purpose cleaner is expected to handle the ordinary accumulation of grease, dirt, protein, and hard-water film that forms on counters, walls, floors, and equipment. To understand why these products work, you need to look past the marketing language on the front label and consider the chemistry that is doing the actual work. An all-purpose cleaner does not contain a single magic ingredient. It is a mixture of several functional ingredients whose proportions are the real specification. The four main classes you will encounter are surfactants, builders, chelators, and solvents. There are also secondary components like fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and corrosion inhibitors, but their presence is generally about aesthetics or shelf life, not primary performance.
