Chapter 1: Understanding Automotive Tires

A tire is the only part of a vehicle that actually touches the ground. It supports the full weight of the car, transmits the drive and braking forces, absorbs the shock of road irregularities, and steers the vehicle by generating a specific kind of friction. It is also a perishable component made of rubber compounds, reinforcing cords, and steel wire, all of which wear out and degrade from heat, ozone, and sunlight. To understand how a tire works, you can't treat it as a black circle of rubber. You have to treat it as a flexible pressure vessel and a composite structure, engineered to manage loads and deformations millions of times over a service life that typically spans years and tens of thousands of miles.

Let's start with the physical structure. A modern automotive tire is not a solid piece of rubber; it is a series of distinct concentric layers, each serving a specific function. The innermost layer, the innerliner, is a specialized rubber sheet designed to be nearly impermeable to air. It replaces the inner tube once used in all vehicles. It is typically made of butyl rubber, and its job is to maintain the air pressure that gives the tire its shape and load capacity. Without a functioning innerliner, air migrates through the tire structure over time, leading to slow leaks and eventual under-inflation.
