Chapter 1: Understanding Bassoon Parts
The bassoon is not a single piece of wood with a few holes. It is a precision mechanism consisting of roughly seventy to over one hundred individual metal and felt components, all mounted on a wooden body that itself is assembled from several sections. When a player presses a key, they are not covering a hole directly. They are initiating a chain of mechanical events: a lever rotates on a rod, a spring applies opposing force, a pad seat seals against a tone hole, and sometimes a separate key is opened or closed somewhere else on the instrument, possibly a foot or more away.
