Chapter 1: Understanding Bassoon Swabs
The bassoon is a complex machine, a column of wood and metal whose sole purpose is to contain a vibrating column of air. But that air you exhale is not dry. It is saturated with moisture, and as it travels from your lungs through the reed and into the instrument's long, conical bore, it cools and condenses. This condensation is the fundamental problem that the bassoon swab exists to solve. Without a method of removing this water, the instrument's performance and structural integrity will degrade, often quickly and permanently.
Consider the physical reality of what happens when you play. The bore of a bassoon is roughly nine feet of tubing, folded back on itself. The surfaces of this bore are the most critical acoustic environment in the instrument. They are lined with wood (traditionally maple) and sealed with a variety of oils, varnishes, or synthetic bore sealants. When warm, moist air from your breath hits the cooler internal walls, it condenses into a film of liquid water. In the narrow confines of the tenor bore (the uppermost joint), this can happen almost immediately, even forming droplets large enough to create a gurgling sound as you play.
