Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Cables

Bicycle cables are the mechanical link between your hands and the components that stop or slow the bike. When you pull a brake lever, a wire inside a protective housing transmits that force to the caliper. When you click a shifter, a similar wire moves a derailleur precisely enough to shift between cogs whose spacing is measured in millimeters. This book treats these wires and housings as what they are: precision components subject to friction, corrosion, fatigue, and stretch. Getting them right makes a bike feel safe and responsive. Getting them wrong makes a bike dangerous or frustrating, regardless of the quality of every other component on the frame.

Consider a concrete example. A road cyclist descending at 65 km/h needs to shed speed before a tight corner. The brake lever moves perhaps 25 mm at the finger tip. That movement must translate to a caliper movement of a few millimeters, with enough force to clamp the rim hard enough to decelerate the bike without locking the wheel. Every bit of slack in the cable, every millimeter of housing compression under load, and every bit of friction between the wire and the housing liner delays and weakens that brake application. A cable system in good condition delivers nearly instantaneous, predictable response. A cable system with a frayed wire, a kinked housing, or dried-out lubrication can turn that same descent into a guessing game where the brake bites late and unevenly.
