The function of a protective pad
A bicycle protective pad is a piece of impact-absorbing and abrasion-resistant material worn on the body to reduce the severity of injuries during a crash or fall. It is not armor in the medieval sense, and it does not make the rider invulnerable. It is a disposable, replaceable safety component that undergoes a specific job: to absorb kinetic energy and distribute the force of an impact over a larger surface area, preventing or reducing fractures, abrasions, and soft-tissue damage.
The physics is straightforward. When a rider falls, the body is moving at speed and carries kinetic energy. On hard contact with the ground, the body decelerates rapidly. The rate of deceleration determines the force applied to the underlying bone and tissue. A pad works by increasing the distance over which that deceleration happens. The foam or other damping material compresses, adding a few critical millimeters of stopping distance, which reduces the peak force transmitted to the joint. It also spreads the force across a wider area, reducing pressure at any single contact point. This is why a pad that is correctly fitted but not tight is better than a loose pad; if the pad moves on impact, it does not have a chance to compress effectively.
