Chapter 1: Understanding Blank ID Cards
A blank ID card is not simply a piece of white plastic with a convenient shape. It is a precision-engineered substrate designed to receive printed images and encoded data, and to survive a demanding service life that ranges from a few months to more than a decade. To understand why these cards matter, it helps to look at them not as a single item, but as a system of layers. Each layer has a job, and the performance of the final card is a direct result of how those layers are chosen and assembled.
Consider a standard credit-card style ID card, which measures 85.6 mm by 54 mm, with a thickness that typically falls within a range of 30 to 60 mils (approximately 0.76 mm to 1.52 mm). The most common material is polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. A standard PVC card is not a solid piece of that plastic. Instead, it is a sandwich of several sheets or layers. The core layer, which provides the card's base stiffness and color, is fused with thinner overlay films on the front and back. These overlay films are critically important. They protect the printed surface from abrasion, which is why they are sometimes called "secure" layers or "shield" layers.
