Blood typing test kits are self-contained diagnostic tools designed to determine an individual's ABO and RhD blood group status. They package the necessary reagents, substrates, and controls into a standardized format that allows a user to perform a serological test outside of a large, automated laboratory environment. While the specific components vary by manufacturer and format, the core purpose remains consistent: to produce a reliable, interpretable result that indicates the presence or absence of specific antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
The entire field of blood typing rests on the principles of immunology and agglutination. The ABO system is defined by two antigens, A and B, which can be present on a red blood cell's surface. A person's plasma contains naturally occurring antibodies against the antigens they lack. For example, an individual with type A blood has anti-B antibodies. Blood typing kits exploit this interaction by mixing a patient's red blood cells with reagent antibodies designed to detect specific antigens. In a typical forward typing test, anti-A and anti-B sera are mixed with a patient's sample. If the blood cells possess the corresponding antigen, the antibodies bind to them, creating a visible latticework of cells called agglutination. This clumping is a positive reaction. The absence of clumping indicates the antigen is absent.
This seemingly simple process is the foundation of modern transfusion medicine. The primary and most critical real-world context for blood typing is the compatibility test prior to a transfusion.
