The Instrument as a System

Pick up a trumpet, trombone, or tuba, and you are holding a precision machine. The tubing may look simple, but within that assembled mess of brass, every length of pipe, every angle of a bend, and every micron of a valve's clearance is calculated. The instrument is designed to do one thing: convert the buzz of your lips into a standing wave of air inside the tube. That standing wave is what produces the tone you and your audience hear. The physical dimensions of the instrument determine its tuning. The vibrations of the instrument's body and the smoothness of its inner walls influence the tone color and response. This means that the way you care for the instrument is not an aesthetic concern; it is a direct intervention in how the instrument functions. A heavier layer of dirt on the inside of the slide, a missing drop of oil on the valve, or a slow, sticky slide leg will manifest as an audible problem in your playing.
