A canopy weight is not a bucket of sand. It is not a cinder block with a hook screwed into it, and it is not a sixty-pound bag of gravel that happened to be near the tent when the wind picked up. It is a counterforce component in an engineered system that keeps a temporary structure where you put it. A full understanding of canopy weights has to start with the mechanics of that system, not with the weight itself, because the weight is only effective when it is placed correctly, has the proper surface contact, and is matched to the aerodynamics of the canopy above it.
Consider a common failure. A 10x10 pop-up canopy weighs roughly forty pounds. Its frame is aluminum, its fabric is a polyester-polyethylene blend, and its legs are connected by gravity and a few spring-loaded buttons. Under a steady wind of fifteen miles per hour, the canopy experiences an uplift force of roughly forty-five to fifty pounds at a typical roof angle. That means a medium-strength breeze is almost exactly canceling out the weight of the whole structure. At twenty-five miles per hour, the uplift force climbs past one hundred and ten pounds, and the canopy begins to act more like a parachute than a shelter. Now add a gust that spikes from twenty-five to thirty-five miles per hour, and your forty-pound canopy is being asked to hold down a force of two hundred pounds
