The Misunderstood Safety Device

A car window net is not a passive accessory. It is a containment device and an impact barrier, and its failure mode has direct consequences for the safety of your passengers, your cargo, and other road users. While they look simple, the difference between a well-engineered net and a cheap piece of mesh is the difference between a system that works for a decade and one that fails at the worst possible moment.

To understand why this matters, consider the two primary functions of a net. The first is containment. This covers the most common applications: keeping a dog's head inside the vehicle, preventing loose cargo from ejecting through an open window during a sudden stop, and stopping arms or debris from exiting the vehicle. The second function is impact attenuation. This is the domain of racing nets and safety barriers, where the net is designed to absorb energy in a collision or a rollover, preventing a body from being ejected or hit by flying objects.

Most cheap nets on the market fail at the second function. They are designed for containment of a calm pet at city speeds, but they have no capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of a 25-kilogram dog flying into them at highway speed during a panic stop.
