A changing mat or changing tray is a padded surface designed to place a baby on during a diaper change. At its core, it is a very simple object: a soft but supportive cushion, usually covered in a non-porous plastic or synthetic leather material, often with raised edges or a contoured shape to help keep the baby in place. The changing tray is the same concept, but typically a rigid plastic shell with a cushioned insert, designed to sit on top of a dresser, a table, or a dedicated changing table frame.

Despite its simplicity, the changing mat is one of the most heavily used items in a nursery or a childcare facility. An infant in diapers will require between six and ten changes per day, which means a single mat in a home will be used roughly two thousand times in its first year. In a commercial childcare center with a ratio of four infants per caregiver, a single changing station can easily see forty or more changes per day. Multiply that by three hundred operating days per year, and the mat at a busy center is subject to more than twelve thousand cycles of use, cleaning, and disinfection in a single year. That level of abuse is not, and cannot be, the same as what a mat will experience in a quiet home nursery. This fundamental difference in use-case intensity drives nearly every design, material, and pricing decision in the category.
