A clothes valet is a mechanical device designed to hold garments, typically jackets, shirts, trousers, or coats, in a ready-to-wear state while not being worn. It is distinct from a simple hook or hanger rack because it is an articulated system, often with a counterbalance, that allows the user to pull the garment down from a high storage position to a more accessible and convenient height. The most common configuration is a horizontal bar fixed at one end to a wall-mounted or floor-standing post, with a mechanism that allows the bar to pivot and then return to its original position. This seemingly simple action solves a very old and persistent problem in wardrobe management.

The problem is the traditional closet rod. In standard built-in wardrobes, the hanging rod is typically installed at a height that allows the longest garments, such as dresses or long coats, to hang without pooling on the floor. For a tall person, that height may be comfortable, but for the average adult, the practical range for reaching is often lower. Reaching up to a rod to lift a heavy winter coat or a suit jacket off the hanger involves a significant reach and a degree of physical exertion. Over time, this repeated overhead reaching is more than an inconvenience. It is a corrective exercise that can strain the shoulder joint, and for individuals with mobility issues, back problems, or significantly reduced stature, it can make the use of a hanging rod
