A craft mold is a precision tool, not an accessory. Its only job is to act as a negative space, shaping a liquid or pliable material into a solid, predetermined form. The term covers a wide range of hardware, from a small, two-part silicone mold for a custom resin pendant to a heavy-duty, multi-cavity steel mold used in a small factory making concrete pavers. To understand how a mold works, you have to move past the idea of it as a simple container. The physics that govern a successful cast are the physics of fluid dynamics and heat transfer. When you pour liquid resin into a silicone cavity, you are asking the liquid to flow into every intricate corner and undercut, displacing the air that also occupies that space.
