Crampons are a frame of spikes that attach to the soles of your boots. They serve a single, brutal purpose: to convert the downward and forward forces of your steps into penetration and purchase on snow, ice, or frozen turf. Without them, a slope of hard snow or a frozen waterfall is a hostile, impassable surface. With them, it becomes a negotiable, often safe, medium of travel. The core concept is simple, but the engineering is subtle. A crampon works by concentrating your body weight onto a series of sharp points. The pressure at the tip of a single point is immense. A 100-kilogram (220-pound) climber carrying a 10-kilogram pack generates roughly 1,100 newtons of force downward. If that force is transmitted through a point with an area of only 1 square millimeter, the pressure at the tip reaches roughly 1,100 megapascals. This is more than enough to fracture the surface of solid ice or compressed snow.
