Chapter 1: Understanding Denture Repair Kits

A denture repair kit is not a single product. It is a system - a combination of materials, mixing implements, and procedural knowledge that, when used correctly, restores a fractured or damaged acrylic denture to a usable, safe, and often aesthetically acceptable state. Understanding what these kits actually contain, how the chemistry works, and why the repair holds (or fails) is the foundation for every other decision you will make, whether you are repairing a single denture at a kitchen table or running a high-volume dental laboratory.

Start with the physical reality. A standard denture is a removable prosthesis, typically made from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), that rests on the oral tissues and replaces missing teeth. PMMA is a hard, glassy polymer. It has good optical clarity, reasonable strength in compression, and decades of clinical history - but it is brittle. It is not a metal. When a denture drops onto a ceramic tile floor, or when a patient bites into a hard object at the wrong angle, the acrylic can crack. It can also break cleanly in half, lose a tooth, or develop a hairline fracture at a stress concentration point, usually at the midline or around a reline area. The repair kit is your answer to these failures.
