What a Diving Belt Actually Is
At its most basic, a diving belt is a strap worn around the waist that holds weights to counteract the natural buoyancy of the diver and their equipment. A human body, a wetsuit, and a tank all have positive buoyancy. This means they float. The diving belt adds negative buoyancy, allowing the diver to descend and remain at a working depth without expending constant effort to swim down. In technical terms, the belt is the primary tool for achieving neutral buoyancy at a specific depth.
The assembly consists of four core components: the webbing or strap, the weight retainers or slides, the buckle, and the weights themselves. The webbing is the load-bearing element. The retainers are the small clips or keepers that hold individual lead weights in place along the strap. The buckle is the closure and release mechanism.
