The Mechanism at the Core
A door closer is a self-contained mechanical device that controls the swing of a door and ensures it returns to a closed position. While it is often thought of as a simple spring-loaded hinge, a true door closer is a hydraulic or pneumatic device that uses a spring for stored energy and a fluid for controlled motion. The purpose is not just to close the door, but to control how it closes: the speed, the force, and the final latching action. A door that swings shut instantly is not working correctly. A door that takes ten seconds to close is also not working correctly. The closer is there to create a predictable, safe, and efficient closing cycle.
To understand it, consider the basic components that are found in the vast majority of units. The body of a surface-mounted closer is a cast-iron or aluminum housing filled with hydraulic oil. Inside, a piston is connected to a pinion gear. The pinion gear is turned by an arm that is attached to the door and the frame. When the door opens, it turns the pinion, which forces the piston against a spring. This compresses the spring, storing the energy needed to close the door. As the door is released, the spring expands, forcing the piston back. The hydraulic oil, however, cannot move freely. It is forced through small orifices and past adjustment valves.
