Chapter 1: Understanding Drawer Slides

A drawer slide is a linear motion bearing. That is the sentence that gets lost in every product description, every hardware aisle, and every YouTube video that shows a builder casually pushing a drawer closed. A drawer slide must support a load, guide it along a straight path, and do so repeatedly, under varying conditions, for the useful life of the product it is installed in. When you specify a drawer slide, you are specifying a bearing, and the rules that govern bearings—load rating, speed, lubrication, wear, and alignment—govern drawer slides too.

Take a common kitchen cabinet drawer. It might be 20 inches deep, 18 inches wide, and made of 5/8-inch plywood. Empty, that box weighs around 15 pounds. You load it with pots, cast iron pans, and assorted tools and the weight can easily reach 40 pounds. A person opens that drawer 10 to 20 times a day. That is 7,000 cycles a year. A typical household cabinet drawer might be expected to last 20 to 30 years. That means the slide you are installing now is being asked to complete 150,000 to 200,000 open-and-close cycles while carrying a load that can exceed three times its worst-case condition. If you start with a slide rated for 50 pounds and your actual load is 40 pounds, you are running at 80 percent of the dynamic rating, which in a bearing context means the slide will wear—measurably, visibly—and likely fail well before the 20-year mark.
