An e-book reader is a specialized computing device, but unlike a general-purpose tablet or phone, it has been engineered around one primary function: displaying static text for long reading sessions. That single purpose drives every design decision, and understanding the parts means understanding how each component serves that purpose. A cracked display panel on a phone is an inconvenience; the same crack on an e-book reader renders a library of thousands of books unreadable. A swollen battery in a tablet is a hazard; in an e-book reader it also deforms the front housing and often damages the fragile display ribbon cable in the process.
When we talk about e-book reader parts, we are talking about the physical components that make up devices such as the Amazon Kindle line, Kobo devices, PocketBook readers, and the various Android-based readers still produced by smaller manufacturers. These devices share a common architecture that distinguishes them from tablets. They use an electrophoretic display (the technology behind the "E Ink" brand), a low-power mainboard typically based on ARM processors, a modest amount of storage for books, a rechargeable battery sized for weeks of reading rather than hours of video, and a set of connectivity modules for Wi-Fi and increasingly Bluetooth. The front-light system, which illuminates the display for night reading, is a component that exists in nearly every modern reader but did not exist in the earliest generations.
