It is a complex assembly of at least two distinct technologies working in tandem to create the illusion of a printed page. Every E-book reader on the market is centered on what is called an EPD (Electronic Paper Display). Unlike the LCD or OLED screen on a phone or laptop, an EPD is not a light source. It is a reflective technology that uses ambient light to display its image. The core of the EPD is a layer of micro-capsules, each roughly the diameter of a human hair, suspended in a transparent fluid. Inside each micro-capsule are two types of pigment particles: positively charged titanium dioxide particles and negatively charged carbon black particles. When an electric field is applied to the display, the charged particles physically move within the capsule.
