The Fundamental Function of a Switch

At its most basic, an electrical switch is a device that creates, breaks, or changes the path of an electrical current in a circuit. While the concept seems conceptually simple, the physical implementation of that task is the subject of complex engineering and material science. The entire discipline of power electronics, relay engineering, and even early digital computing is rooted in how a piece of conductive material moves apart or together to control the flow of electrons. When you operate a toggle switch on a wall, you are physically moving a conductive contact either into a closed circuit to power a light, or separating it to interrupt that current flow.

Consider the common single-pole, single-throw toggle switch used to control a kitchen countertop outlet. In that scenario, you are opening and closing a circuit that supplies 120 volts alternating current (VAC). When the switch is in the OFF (open) position, there is a physical air gap between the contacts within the switch housing, which prevents current from flowing across a high resistance air gap. When you flip it ON, metal contacts, often made of a copper alloy with a fine silver overlay, are forced together into a low-resistance path, allowing the circuit to energize. That is the core of switching an alternating current circuit.
