Chapter 1: Understanding Eye Primer
Eye primer is a product built to solve a single, brutal problem: the eyelid is one of the worst surfaces on the human body for makeup to stick to. It moves constantly, it produces oil that breaks down pigments, and its skin is among the thinnest on the body. A primer's sole reason for existing is to create a stable, uniform, and adherent layer between the skin and the eyeshadow, eyeliner, or pigment placed on top of it.
To understand why this is necessary, consider the mechanics of the eyelid. The skin here is roughly half the thickness of skin elsewhere, and it is stretched over the orbicularis oculi muscle and the tarsal plate. Every blink, squint, or expression pulls this skin taut and then relaxes it. This constant flexing puts physical stress on any applied film. Furthermore, the eyelid hosts a higher density of sebaceous glands in the surrounding area, and the natural movement of the eyelashes helps wick that oil onto the lid. Oil is the enemy of adhesion. It creates a slick barrier between the stratum corneum and any pigment particles, causing them to slide, clump, or simply fall off. The product exists to buffer the pigment from this hostile environment.
The functional mechanism of a primer is not magic; it is controlled chemistry and physics. A primer works on the principle of creating a high-surface-energy, dry, and level substrate. Most eye primers are formulated with a high percentage of volatile solvents,
