A facial cleansing kit is not a single product. It is a coordinated set of components, designed to work together to remove dirt, oil, sweat, makeup, and dead skin cells from the face more thoroughly than manual hand washing alone. For the purposes of this handbook, a kit is defined as the combination of a cleansing device (the motorized or manual tool), its interchangeable brush heads or contact surfaces, a companion cleansing agent (typically a gel, foam, or cream), and the usage protocol that ties these elements together. Some kits are sold as complete regimens in a single box. Others are sold as a starter device with the expectation that refill brush heads and cleansers will be purchased separately. Both configurations are common, and both are covered throughout this book.

The category exists because the face has distinct needs compared to the rest of the body. Facial skin is thinner, has more sebaceous glands per square centimeter, and is constantly exposed to environmental pollutants and cosmetic products.
