Chapter 1: Understanding Finger Cots

Finger cots are single-use protective covers that fit over one or more fingers. They look like short, thick gloves without the hand portion, and they are made from elastic polymers such as latex, nitrile, or vinyl. Their purpose is simple: to create a barrier between the skin and the environment. That barrier can work in two directions. It protects the wearer from a hazardous substance, a contaminant, or a sharp edge. It also protects the product, surface, or material being handled from the oils, salts, and microbes that naturally cover human skin. Understanding which direction of protection you need is the first step in understanding how to use them correctly.

Consider the two most common scenarios. In a dental clinic, a practitioner uses a finger cot to apply a fluoride varnish to a child's teeth. The cot prevents the clinician's skin from directly contacting the oral mucosa and prevents the varnish from soaking into the skin. In an electronics assembly line, a worker uses a powder-free nitrile cot to handle a circuit board. Here, the cot is not protecting the worker from the board; it is protecting the board from the worker. A single fingerprint can leave enough oil to cause corrosion or disrupt a solder joint. Both scenarios use the same physical object, but the performance requirements are completely different. The dental cot needs to be soft and non-irritating. The electronics cot needs to be clean and residue-free.
