At the simplest level, furniture "cleaners" and "polishes" are two distinct categories of chemical intervention, though the industry blurs the line on product labels. A cleaner is designed to remove. It breaks the bond between a contaminant (dirt, old wax, grease, fingerprints) and the finish. A polish is designed to deposit. It leaves a protective or aesthetic layer on the surface: wax, oil, silicone, or a polymer resin. Some products try to do both, a "clean-and-polish" that has ingredients to strip and ingredients to build, but a successful professional rarely relies on such compromises. When you need a clean surface for a new finish application, a one-step is a blunt instrument. When you just need a quick sheen for a sales floor, it can be adequate.
