Every day, millions of devices are powered by small, cylindrical, and rectangular cells that we collectively call general purpose batteries. These are the AAs, AAAs, Cs, Ds, and 9-volts that sit in remote controls, wall clocks, flashlights, smoke detectors, wireless keyboards, and children's toys. They are also the lithium cells inside a garage door opener and the heavy-duty units in an emergency radio. Despite the rise of built-in rechargeable batteries in phones and laptops, the general purpose battery remains a fundamental, dependent component of modern life. This chapter explains what these batteries actually are, how they produce electricity, and why they still matter so much.
The term "general purpose" is a bit of a misnomer. It doesn't mean a battery is generic or low-quality. Instead, it defines a category of batteries designed for universal, non-specialized use across a wide range of low to moderate power devices. They are manufactured in standardized sizes (defined by standards bodies like the International Electrotechnical Commission and the American National Standards Institute) to fit interchangeably into various devices. This interchangeability is the core of their utility. You can put a Duracell, an Energizer, a Panasonic, or a store-brand alkaline AA into the same flashlight and it will work, provided it has the correct voltage and a similar enough physical shape.
What makes a general purpose battery different from, say, an automotive battery or a power tool pack is its fundamental design as a primary (non-rechargeable) or sometimes rechargeable cell
