Consider what happens at the moment a hammer strikes a nail. The head is moving at a speed determined by the length of your swing and the acceleration of your arm. When it contacts the nail head, that kinetic energy is transferred in a fraction of a millisecond. The nail moves. The wood accepts it. The hammer head survives to do it again. But it only survives if its geometry, material, and mass are correctly matched to the task. A hammer head is not a generic lump of steel. It is a purpose-built instrument where every curve, angle, and alloy choice has a job to do.
The first thing to understand is that a hammer head is a tool of concentrated impact. Its entire purpose is to concentrate force from your arm into a small, hard surface. The head's shape and material determine how that force is delivered. A claw hammer head, for instance, has a flat, circular striking face and a forked claw on the opposite end. The striking face is hardened to resist deformation when it hits a nail. The claw is tempered differently - it must be harder than the wood you are prying into, but not brittle enough to snap under the leverage you apply.
