Chapter 1: Understanding Hard Drive Circuit Boards

When you are holding a hard drive that will not spin up, the problem is often not with the spinning parts at all. The failure sits on a green or blue slab of epoxy at the bottom of the drive: the printed circuit board, or PCB. Understanding what this board actually does requires a split in your thinking. You cannot treat it like a simple adapter or a swappable module. It is a specialized computer in its own right, functioning as the drive's control system, its power management unit, and its data translator all at once.

To get the most out of this book, you need a mental model of what a hard drive PCB contains. For the sake of practical repair, you can divide the board into four functional areas. First comes the power management section. This is the series of voltage regulators and filters that take your 5-volt and 12-volt SATA power lines and drop them down to the much lower voltages the drive logic uses. On a standard 3.5-inch drive, you are usually looking for a 5-volt rail for the logic chip and a 12-volt rail for the spindle motor. These are the first things you test when a drive is completely dead. The power section is also where you will find the TVS diodes.
