At its core, an HDMI splitter takes a single HDMI signal from one source and sends identical copies of it to multiple displays. An HDMI switch does the opposite: it takes multiple sources, such as a Blu-ray player, a computer, and a game console, and lets you choose which one sends its signal to a single display. These are the two foundational devices in this category, but their simple definitions hide a complex interplay of electronics and signal management that any professional needs to understand to avoid costly failures.

Consider a common scenario in a modern office: a conference room with a large display mounted on the wall. The presenter has a laptop, but the room is also equipped with a dedicated conferencing camera and a wireless presentation system. In this setup, an HDMI switch is the central hub, allowing the presenter to select the laptop feed for a slideshow or the camera feed for a video call. Now, imagine the same room needs to display the presentation on two screens, one at the front and one at the back for the audience. A splitter is required to duplicate the selected signal to both displays. In many professional installations, you'll find a switch and a splitter working in tandem, or a more advanced device called a matrix switch that combines the functions, allowing any of several sources to be routed to any of several displays independently.
