A hockey stick shaft is the primary interface between a player and the puck. It is not merely a handle; it is the structural core of the entire stick, transmitting every ounce of force generated by a player's body into the blade and, ultimately, the puck. Understanding a shaft means moving beyond the surface-level aesthetics of graphics and brand names to the engineering realities of materials, geometry, and mechanical response. At its most basic, a hockey stick shaft is a long, hollow, generally rectangular tube. It measures approximately 60 inches in length from the top of the butt-end to the heel where the blade is attached. Its primary dimensions, however, are not the length, but the cross-section, which is standardized to be about 1.25 inches by 0.80 inches for senior sticks. This profile has been established for a reason: it allows for a comfortable, secure grip while maintaining torsional rigidity so the blade's face angle does not twist in a player's hands when they shoot or pass.

The shaft has several distinct functional zones. The top portion, handled above the player's lower hand, is the area of maximum leverage.
