The Stocking as a Manufactured Product
A holiday stocking is a soft-sided container, typically between 18 and 24 inches in overall length, designed to be hung from a vertical surface and filled with small gifts. That description is functionally complete, but it hides the complexity that determines whether a stocking will look good for one season or survive thirty. Treating stockings as an engineered product, with specific material properties, construction standards, and failure points, is the first step toward making sound purchasing, installation, and business decisions.
The stocking's basic anatomy is consistent across almost all examples. The main body is the leg, which is usually shaped with a slight curve or a straight tapering profile. At the top is the cuff, a folded or attached band that can be turned down over the leg. The foot is the closed end, often shaped with a distinct heel and toe to mimic an actual boot. The hanging loop, made of ribbon, cord, or the same material as the body, is attached either to the back of the cuff or to the interior seam.
