What an Ice Screw Is and What It Must Do
An ice screw is a hollow, threaded tube of hardened steel that, when rotated into ice, creates a mechanical anchor capable of holding a climber's weight, and in many cases, the force of a serious fall. Unlike rock protection, which relies on friction or geometry within a crack, an ice screw is a self-contained system. It must cut its own hole, retain that cut ice (in the form of a core), and then resist pull-out forces through the interlocking of its external threads with the surrounding ice. Understanding this fundamental process - that it is a tool that must cut and then hold - is the first step toward using it safely.
This is not an abstract concept. Consider a simple comparison: a \(1/2\)-inch (12.7 mm) bolt embedded in concrete. The concrete is a relatively homogenous, brittle material with immense compressive strength. The bolt holds because of the crushing force of the concrete against the threads. Ice is different. It is a crystalline solid that is viscoelastic - it flows and deforms under pressure. Under normal conditions, it is strong, but its strength is highly dependent on temperature, density, and the strain rate applied to it. A slow, steady pull on a well-placed screw will eventually cause the ice to creep and the screw to loosen. A sudden, high-velocity impact, such as a fall, can cause the ice to fracture in a brittle manner. The
