Jigsaw puzzle accessories are not optional decorations. They are functional tools that address three real problems every puzzler faces: protecting work in progress, organizing thousands of similar-looking pieces, and making the process physically comfortable. This chapter defines the category with that as the starting point. A jigsaw puzzle accessory is any separate product designed to support the assembly, storage, organization, or presentation of a jigsaw puzzle. This excludes the puzzle itself and its box, but includes the equipment you use to handle it more effectively.
Consider a concrete example. A 2,000-piece puzzle measures roughly 38 by 26 inches when fully assembled. You do not assemble it in a single sitting, and you likely do not have a dedicated table that is permanently free. Without a means to move or protect that work, the options are to finish it in one long session (which most people cannot do) or to disassemble it and start over next time. Accessories exist to make the process flexible and repeatable. A rolling puzzle mat allows you to roll up a partially completed puzzle around a tube, trapping it between felt layers, and then store it safely. A puzzle board is a rigid, flat surface that allows you to carry a completed section or an entire in-progress puzzle from one room to another without disturbing the pieces. The category as a whole exists to give the user control over their work environment, not the other way around.
