How Laptop Hinges Actually Work
A laptop hinge is a precision mechanical bearing that joins the display assembly to the base chassis, controlling the opening angle and holding the screen at whatever position you set. Remove the plastic cover around the hinge and you will find a metal assembly, usually two arms connected by a cylindrical pin, with a mechanism that resists motion. That resistance is the entire job. The hinge must allow smooth rotation from closed (roughly 0 degrees) to the open position (sometimes as far as 180 degrees), while producing enough friction to hold the display when you stop pushing. If the friction is too high or too low, the assembly is a failure, regardless of how well every other part works.
A typical laptop hinge consists of four essential components. First, the bracket: a stamped or machined plate that bolts the hinge to the base chassis (the part that houses the keyboard and motherboard). Second, the hinge arm: a longer metal arm that attaches to the display assembly, frequently with screws into the display mounting ears. Third, the pivot: the circular barrel around the pin that contains the friction mechanism. Fourth, the torsion elements: these are usually either a combination of Belleville washers, which are spring steel discs that apply axial pressure, or a wrapped torsion spring around the pin, which provides both radial tension and opening force.
