Consider a measurement you performed recently. Not the instrument you used — the digital caliper, the depth gauge, the temperature sensor — but everything that was attached to it, holding it, connecting it, or interpreting its signal. That array of supporting components is the subject of this book. Measuring tool and sensor accessories are the adapters, contact points, stands, clamps, extensions, cables, transmitters, displays, mounts, and calibration fixtures that sit between the instrument and the real world. They decide whether the reading you get is trustworthy, whether it is repeatable, and whether the instrument lasts or fails early.
On a shop floor, the difference between a good measurement and a bad one is rarely the instrument's resolution. A new digital micrometer reads to 0.0001 inch every time, but the measurement is only as good as the anvil faces pressing on the part at the right pressure, with no debris in between, with the frame held at a stable temperature. Those conditions are controlled by accessories. The interchangeable anvils, the ratchet stop that limits measuring force, the calibration standards you check against — these are accessories, and they shape every reading. A $500 micrometer on a $30 set of worn anvils will produce worse data than a $150 micrometer on a clean, properly calibrated anvil set.
