Every model and toy you have ever touched has a paper twin. That twin is the manual: the folded sheet in the box, the stapled booklet, the single page with the parts diagram. For most people it is packaging filler. For anyone who buys, sells, repairs, or restores models and toys, the manual is a working document that can authenticate a product, define its operating parameters, and set its resale value. A model or toy manual is the manufacturer-issued documentation that explains how to assemble, operate, maintain, or safely use the product it accompanies. That is the working definition used throughout this handbook. It is deliberately broad because the category includes a huge spread of material: the one-page paper insert for a $2 plastic wind-up car, the 48-page illustrated booklet for a $1,200 scale locomotive, the laminated quick-start card for a hobby-grade drone, and the saddle-stitched pamphlet that came with a 1970s slot-car set.
