The motor vehicle engine is the device that converts the chemical energy in fuel into mechanical work that moves a vehicle. This transformation is not a single event but a controlled series of explosions, timed to a fraction of a millisecond, repeated thousands of times a minute. Understanding this process requires moving beyond the simple label of a "gas engine" or "diesel" and looking at the mechanical and thermal realities that govern how the machine behaves, how much power it can make, and how long it will last. The Basic Operating Principle

At its simplest, an engine is an air pump with a combustion chamber attached. It pulls in air, squeezes it, adds fuel, and ignites the mixture. The resulting high-pressure gas pushes on a piston, and that linear motion is converted into rotary motion to spin the wheels. For the vast majority of engines you will encounter—cars, trucks, and most equipment—this happens in four distinct strokes: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. This is the Otto cycle for gasoline engines and a similar sequence for diesels.
