The Function of a Simple Tool

An oboe swab is a small piece of absorbent material, usually anchored to a weighted string or cord, pulled through the bore of the instrument to remove moisture after playing. It is a simple tool, but its function is inseparable from the physics of the instrument and the materials from which the oboe is made. To fully understand the swab, one must understand the environment it operates in: the narrow, conical bore of the oboe, the nature of the moisture left behind by the breath, and the sensitivity of the wood (or synthetic resin) that forms the instrument's body.

When you play the oboe, moist, warm air from your lungs is forced into a tube that is roughly 60 centimeters (about 24 inches) long, with a bore diameter that flairs from a narrow 4 millimeters at the top to about 15 millimeters at the bell. The air is saturated with water vapor. As it travels down the bore and cools, that vapor condenses onto the inner walls. The result is a layer of liquid water—and the salts, proteins, and enzymes present in your saliva—coating the entire interior of the instrument.

This moisture is not simply an inconvenience. The water is absorbed directly into the surface of the wood. For an instrument made of grenadilla (Dalbergia melanoxylon), a dense tropical hardwood, this absorption is slow but relentless.
