The product category is narrow, but the variations in design, power source, and quality are broad. A light that clips onto a rib and runs on three AA batteries is a fundamentally different device from a 12,000-lumen unit that mounts on the pole and runs off a rechargeable battery pack for eight hours. Both are umbrella lights. Understanding the difference requires looking at the system as a whole: the light source, the power source, the control system, and the mechanical interface with the umbrella itself.

The most common configuration in the market today is the clip-on, rib-mounted design. These fixtures attach to one or two of the umbrella's ribs using a spring-loaded clamp or a hook-and-loop strap. The light source is typically an array of LEDs, and the power source is either a battery pack integrated into the lamp head or a separate battery case that hangs below the fabric or clips to the pole.
