Why temperature measurement matters
Body temperature is one of the few physiological parameters you can measure directly, non-invasively, and repeatably in a conscious animal. Heart rate changes with excitement, respiration changes with stress, but core temperature, while not immune to those factors, gives you a relatively stable window into the animal's metabolic and inflammatory state. A fever of even one degree above the normal range can be the first objective sign of infection, inflammation, or tissue injury. Hypothermia, equally important, can be the first sign of shock, toxin exposure, or endocrine failure.
